Managing Full-time Project to Part-Time Maintenance
New Iron Solutions started as a staff augmentation company in the fall of 2000. Over the years, we have found that there is a growing demand for mainframe staff augmentation and services, so we started focusing more and more of our efforts on finding those skill sets.
Many times, after one of our mainframe consultants, would finish an engagement, the client would often want or need some extra support for several hours a week for several months after the end of the project. Sometimes we were able to help them out as they moved from a full-time project to a part-time maintenance scenario, but the problem was that most of our consultants wanted to work 40 hours a week.
We could not deliver to our client’s high level of service and responsiveness to their needs. Early on, we had to pass up these opportunities. So how do we help our clients that need this part-time support?
We had discussions with our staff and came up with a way to help out these clients that needed this type of part-time assistance. By having several clients that needed the same skillset supported, we are able to keep our clients supported and give our consultants the hours they needed to support themselves and their families. An unexpected bonus that came out of this was that several of our consultants that had been at or near retirement wanted to keep working part-time. We were able to keep these consultants engaged and tap their vast knowledge reserves while meeting the needs of our clients.
This became a “Win-Win Solution” and has been a part of the New Iron Solutions mission ever since– never miss an opportunity to help a client and put the right person in the right position.
